Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2026: A Local Guide

Your local guide to the 2026 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, including dates, schedules, morning launches, evening glows, special events, and planning tips.
Every October, Albuquerque becomes one of the most recognizable places in the world.
For nine days, hundreds of colorful hot air balloons fill the sky over the Rio Grande Valley, creating one of the city's most anticipated traditions.
The 54th ExxonMobil Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta runs October 3 through October 11, 2026, at Balloon Fiesta Park. This year's theme, “The Scenic Route,” celebrates the 100th anniversary of Route 66. More than 500 balloons are expected to participate, including approximately 100 special shape balloons.
If you are new to Balloon Fiesta, it can be difficult to know what actually happens during those nine days. There are morning launches, evening glow events, competitions, entertainment, food, vendors, special shape balloons, fireworks, and much more.
Here is what to know before you go.
When Is the 2026 Balloon Fiesta?

October 3–11, 2026
The event takes place at Balloon Fiesta Park, located at 5000 Balloon Fiesta Parkway NE in Albuquerque. The park's launch field covers 78 acres, giving visitors the unusual opportunity to walk among the balloons and crews rather than watching from traditional stadium seating.
The Fiesta is divided into morning and evening sessions.
Morning sessions generally run from approximately 4:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Evening sessions generally run from approximately 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
There are no evening sessions Monday through Wednesday or on the final Sunday.
What Happens in the Morning?
The mornings are where the signature Balloon Fiesta experience happens.
A typical morning begins before sunrise, with the first major event starting around 5:45 a.m. Dawn Patrol follows at 6:00 a.m., with balloons launching and illuminating the field in the darkness.
The Mass Ascension begins around 7:00 a.m.
A Mass Ascension is exactly what it sounds like: hundreds of balloons launch from Balloon Fiesta Park, creating the enormous sky filled with color that the Fiesta is famous for.
The launch itself takes approximately two hours, although the exact timing and duration can vary with weather and flying conditions.
If you want to experience the morning session, arriving early is part of the experience.
What Happens in the Evening?
The evening sessions have a completely different atmosphere.
Instead of watching balloons disappear into the morning sky, visitors can watch them glow against the darkness.
Many evening programs begin around 5:00 p.m., with skydiving demonstrations and entertainment leading into the main event.
Glow events generally begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by Team Fastrax skydiving, a drone light show around 7:45 p.m., and the AfterGlow fireworks show at approximately 8:00 p.m. on major evening-event nights.
The evening experience is especially different because guests can walk among the balloons while their burners illuminate the field.

What Else Is There to Do?

The balloons may be the stars, but there is plenty happening on the ground.
Balloon Fiesta Park's Main Street features food, merchandise, artisans, entertainment, and local New Mexico flavors. In 2026, more than 100 food, merchandise, and artisan vendors are participating.
There are also chainsaw carving demonstrations, auctions, remote-control balloons, live entertainment, skydiving, drone shows, and fireworks throughout the week.
How Much Time Should You Plan?
If you are attending a morning session, plan on making a morning of it.
The official session runs from approximately 4:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., but the most important ballooning activity is concentrated around sunrise and the Mass Ascension.
For evening events, plan for approximately 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., especially on nights featuring a Glow, drone show, and fireworks.
And remember: weather matters.
Ballooning depends on safe flying conditions, so individual events can change or be canceled based on weather.
A Few Local Planning Tips
If this is your first Balloon Fiesta, arriving early is worth it.
The park is large, and the morning schedule begins well before sunrise. Official park-and-ride options are available, and Fiesta shuttles operate continuously during sessions.
General admission for 2026 is $20 per person, per session, with children 12 and under admitted free. Park & Ride tickets are also available.
And bring layers.
October mornings in Albuquerque can be cold before sunrise, while afternoons can become much warmer. Comfortable shoes are also a good idea because the launch field is expansive and much of the experience happens on foot.
Why Balloon Fiesta Feels So Albuquerque
There are major events all over the country, but Balloon Fiesta feels particularly connected to Albuquerque.
The Sandia Mountains create the backdrop. The Rio Grande Valley provides the landscape. The high-desert October weather creates the setting. And the city's relationship with ballooning has become part of its identity.
It is also an event that can be enjoyed in very different ways.
You can arrive before sunrise for Dawn Patrol and Mass Ascension, spend the morning exploring Main Street, return another day for the Special Shape Rodeo, or experience the magic of an evening Glow.

The Balloon Fiesta Is More Than Nine Days
For locals, Balloon Fiesta is not simply something happening at Balloon Fiesta Park.
It changes the rhythm of October throughout Albuquerque.
The balloons become part of the morning commute. They appear over neighborhoods, restaurants, trails, patios, and the Rio Grande. People make traditions around watching the launches, meeting friends for breakfast, attending an evening Glow, or simply looking up when the sky begins to fill.
That is part of what makes Balloon Fiesta such a defining Albuquerque experience.
For nine days, the city looks up.
